The exhibition covered Jean-Michel Basquiat’s whole career, from 1980 to 1988, focusing on 120 defining works. He is considered as one of the most significant painters of the 20th century.

At a young age, Jean-Michel Basquiat left school and made his first studio in the streets of New York. Very quickly, his painting achieved great success, which the artist both sought out and felt subjected to. His work refers back to the eruption of modernity, that of the expressionists, but his filiations are numerous. The acuteness of his gaze, his visits to museums, and the reading of a number of books gave him a real sense of culture. Yet his gaze was directed: the absence of black artists being painfully evident, the artist imposed the need to depict African American culture and revolts in equal measure in his work. Basquiat’s death in 1988 interrupted a very prolific body of work, carried out in under a decade, with over one thousand paintings and even more drawings.

Tribute to Florian Schneider, Kraftwerk
Excerpt of the concert of Kraftwerk
(recorded on November 6, 2014, 1m 46s, © Fondation Louis Vuitton / Peter Franklin)

Following the decease of Florian Schneider, co-founder of Kraftwerk, on Wednesday, May 6th, the Fondation pays tribute to him by sharing an excerpt of the concert the group gave at the Auditorium in 2014.

At the crossroads of music, graphics, video and performance, Kraftwerk, founded in 1970 by Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider, appeared on the art scene in Düsseldorf (Germany) and has marked the musical landscape with its influence on styles as diverse as electro, hip hop, pop and techno. Greatly influenced by the industrial world and modern technology, Kraftwerk's minimalist compositions are created and programmed by computer using electronic instruments and robotic voices.

#FLVfromhome – Family activities
The Fondation offers its young visitors to partake in emblematic activities from the Atelier that can be easily recreated at home. A selection of illustrated games echoing past exhibitions and the Collection displays will also be available online for the kids to learn and play!
Jean-Michel Basquiat’s crown
The three-pointed crown is a recurring symbol in Basquiat’s work. The use of the crown helps him place emphasis on the heroic character of the people who inspire him: sport players, musicians, writers… This week, print, cut, decorate and assemble your own crown in order to wear it! The crown is available to download and print from the website of the Fondation.
